THE 1101st Infantry Brigade awarded medals to 193 elite troops for gallantry in action in the campaign against the Abu Sayyaf bandits in the province of Sulu.

Brigadier General Antonio Bautista, Jr., 1101st Infantry Brigade commander, said the medal he awarded to the troops of the 5th Scout Ranger Battalion included Military Merit Medal (MMM) with spearhead device and Military Commendation Medal (MCM).

Bautista said the recipients of the MMM with spearhead device included four officers and 69 enlisted men, while MCM awardees were seven officers and 113 enlisted personnel.

Bautista congratulated the awardees for their service and duty in maintaining the peace and security of the country.

Bautista the troops remain focus on their mission despite the tragic C-130 plane crash on July 4 in Patikul, Sulu. He stressed that the accomplishment is dedicated to fallen soldiers who perished in the incident.

He noted that the Scout Rangers overran an encampment of Abu Sayyaf bandits that resulted in the death of a bandit following a clash that broke out around 12:20 p.m. Friday, July 9, while they were checking on the reported presence of some 20 bandits in Bud Daho in Lumping Pigi Daho village, Talipao.

The bandits, who are followers of sub-leaders Mundo Sawadjaan and Ellam Nasirin, fled to southeast direction from the clash site following 20 minutes firefight. Two other bandits were reported wounded.

The troops recovered at the fallen Abu Sayyaf encampment 14 hammocks, eight ponchos, three pairs of combat boots and foodstuffs.

“This is a clear manifestation of bravery, professionalism and heroism of the soldiers who continue to be a source of national pride,” Bautista said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
