THE year-on-year regional inflation of the Davao Region slows down to 6.0 percent in September 2021, from 6.7 percent in August 2021. Moreover, the current inflation is extremely higher as compared to the same month of the previous year at 0.8 percent. On the other hand, the purchasing power of the peso (PPP) which measures the real value of the peso in a given period relative to a chosen reference period remained at 77 centavos (see Table 1).

The downward trend of inflation in the region was mainly attributed to the slower annual increment in the index of Transport at 5.2 percent in September 2021, from 9.2 percent in  August 2021 (see Table 2). Moreover, annual growth rates also slowed down in the following  commodity groups: 

  • Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, at 9.0 percent from 9.6 percent; • Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, at 6.7 percent from 7.0 percent; and 
  • Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels, at 4.6 percent from 4.8 percent. 

The index of Education stayed at 0.1 percent. On the other hand, higher inflation was recorded  in the commodity groups of Health; Furnishing, Household Equipment, and Routine  

Maintenance of the House; and Restaurant and Miscellaneous Goods and Services at 4.0  percent, 3.9 percent, and 2.9 percent respectively.

For selected food items, commodity groups specifically Vegetables was reported with the  highest annual growth rate at 31.4 percent in August 2021. Similarly, other commodity groups  with higher annual increments were noted in the indices of Rice, Fruits, and Bread and Cereals In contrast, the index of Fish went down 13.1 percent from 23.1 percent, while the index of  Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate, and Confectionery stayed at 2.6 percent (see Table 3).
