THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is constructing a P95.4-million multi-purpose sports facility at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex in Zamboanga City.

Dr. Cecil Atilano, city sports director, said the project will be undertaken in three phases.

Atilano said the facility will cater to combative sports like boxing, karatedo, taekwondo, muay Thai, Pencak silat, wushu and two courts for badminton.

Funded by the national government through the DPWH, the project was initiated by Atilano’s husband, Elbert, when the latter was still a city councilor last year.

Atilano said that the objective of the project is to help boost sports in this city, home of world-class athletes.

The groundbreaking for the project was held on Saturday, September 3, by the officials of the DPWH district office, the Atilanos, Mayor John Dalipe, and first district Representative Khymer Olaso. (SunStar Zamboanga)
